Power Bombs are a more powerful alternative to the standard Morph Ball Bombs in the Metroid series. In the Prime trilogy, Power Bombs have two main uses: to destroy certain destructible objects and obstacles, and to kill certain enemies. There are two types of Power Bomb pickups: the Main Power Bombs and the Power Bomb expansions. The Main Power Bombs will grant four and two power bombs to start in Prime and Echoes respectively, whereas the expansions will add 1 to the existing power bomb count. If a power bomb expansion is acquired before getting the Main Power Bombs, Samus will still be able to use them as normal, she will just have less of them. Power Bombs are not present in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption.

In Metroid Prime, obtaining the Main Power Bombs from Central Dynamo is required in order to obtain the Artifact of Warrior from Elite Research. Similarly, in Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, defeating the Power Bomb Guardian is a requirement in order to obtain the Sky Temple Key in Dark Oasis.
