Research Core is a room located in the Phendrana Drifts region of Metroid Prime. It contains the Thermal Visor. Upon collecting the Thermal Visor, the door leading to Research Core Access will be disabled, and Samus will need to reenergize it in order to backtrack. The door to Pike Access will still be open, however.

Acquiring the Thermal Visor in this room disables layer "1st Pass Master Layer" and enables layer "2nd Pass Master Layer". It also changes layers in the following rooms:
- Research Core Access - Disables layer "enemies 1st pass" and enables layer "Enemies 2nd pass".
- Research Lab Aether - Disables layer "1st pass - Space Pirates" - and enables layer "2nd Pass Enemy Loadout".
- Aether Lab Entryway - Enables layer "2nd pass scripting".
- West Tower Entrance - Disables layer "1st pass scripting" and enables layer "2nd pass scripting".
- Observatory - Disables layer "1st Pass Pirate" and enables layer "2nd pass Enemy Loadout".
- Observatory Access - Disables layer "enemies 1st pass" and enables layer "enemies 2nd pass".
- Research Lab Hydra - Disables layer "1st Pass Enemy - Pirates" and enables layer "2nd Pass Enemy - Shadow".
- Hydra Lab Entryway - Enables layer "2nd pass scripting".
- Research Entrance - Enables layers "FOG" and "2nd Pass - shadow Pirates".
- Ice Ruins West - Disables layer "1st Pass Enemy" and enables layer "2nd Pass Enemy".
- Plaza Walkway - Disables layer "Enemies 1st pass" and enables layer "Enemies 2nd pass".
- Ruins Entryway - Disables layer "Initial Pass Atomics" and enables layer "1st pass enemies".
- Ice Ruins East - Disables layer "1st pass enemies" and enables layer "2nd pass enemies".
