Ice Beam Before Flaahgra (IBBF) is a trick in Metroid Prime that allows for the Ice Beam to be acquired immediately after getting the Morph Ball Bombs in most speedrun routes. It is a lengthy wallcrawl that traverses a lot of rooms, but it avoids having to do the puzzle in Energy Core and skips needing to have Wave Beam to go to the far region of Chozo. Depending on the route, it can also be counterintuitively referred to as IBBFAF (Ice Beam Before Flaahgra After Flaahgra), as some routes incorporate this wallcrawl after defeating Flaahgra.

Usage in Speedruns

Any%

Used to avoid traveling through Crossway and enables skipping the Chozo Ghosts fight in Hall of the Elders.

100%

Used to obtain Ice Beam before fighting Flaahgra.

Performed immediately after collecting morph ball bombs.

Enabling exiting Research Core via the ice door after thermal visor and immediately collecting plasma beam.

Low%

While not currently used in RTA low% runs it does save time when executed optimally in a no-space-jump setting.

Used in the current low% TAS

Left Side

Wallcrawling using the left side of the room is the fastest way of traversing this room out of bounds, and is the most common method for top-level speedruns. However, it is also the most complex and difficult of the three methods, and the most prone to failure if you don't have the proper experience.
